Circuit | we are what we are, 38min / Experimental film / Portrait (2018)
'Circuit | we are what we are' (2018, UK) is a portrait film with experimental approaches to the format, - as well as to the concept. The film was made by the help of volunteers and it has been awarded with the Leeds for Life Scholarship Foundation Award 2018. The film moves inbetween the common categories and carefully touches meaningful structures of social life, as well as the search for sense of Life and self-realization. Through existential but also trivial themes and questions the interviewing artist tries to expose a non-verbal confession of the protagonists. These empathic moments have the artistic claim to create a format for an encounter.
We are what we are ... thus stands for an unvarnished simplicity in the representation of individuals and facts, which is contrary to a popular form of presentation or a consumer-friendly #photo-filter-effects-culture.
As a result and all in all the film can be understand as document of the time and as an at times confused insight into the life of a major English city in times of British withdrawal from the EU. and a collaged excerpt of Life of a major English City in times of political confusion.
